Depression, Anxiety and Bipolar Disorders

Mood and anxiety disorders like depression are some of the most common mental illnesses, and can be either chronic or episodic. Mood disorders may be caused by brain functioning, genetic disorder or a life event, causing individuals to be challenged with everyday life functions. Through a variety of treatment options, symptoms can be managed successfully. Early intervention is essential in all areas of medicine, including the treatment of psychiatric illnesses.

Starting with the Patient Assessment Services (PAS) team, the clinical teams work with the individual to evaluate the appropriate level of care needed to treat the current indications of illness. At times, patients require a level of intensive treatment only available through an inpatient stay, or participation in a partial hospital day program which offers the appropriate level of intervention or next level of care after an inpatient visit. Working with PAS, the team guides the patient, as well as any individuals serving as a support system, in selecting the appropriate inpatient, partial hospital or outpatient program to best address the person’s health needs.

Our Programs

Adult Intensive Treatment Unit

We offer inpatient services for adults aged 18 years or older needing a high level of psychiatric care for symptoms associated with major depression, bipolar, schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder. We also address issues related to substance use that are often diagnosed along with psychotic and mood disorders. During the intensive five to ten day inpatient stay, patients’ symptoms and medications are stabilized plus therapies are introduced to explore opportunities to manage chronic conditions on a daily basis.

Adult General Treatment Units

Butler Hospital offers three adult inpatient units to meet the variety of acuity levels and symptoms of patients. Each offers a full range of treatment programs to stabilization the symptoms and to establish a foundation for ongoing treatment. With the supervision of a psychiatrist and working in group therapy sessions over a five to ten day stay, patients learn there is hope.

HealthPath Program

This insurance-based program is designed specifically for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island members. HealthPath provides wrap around services for substance use and mental health disorders, including treatment of co-occurring disorders. You pay one monthly payment regardless of the frequency or type of visits your clinical team selects for your treatment plan. Additionally, the program covers long term management of chronic conditions to provide the support needed for individuals to regain stability and discover better wellbeing.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Clinic

This outpatient clinic offers a novel therapy for treatment-resistant depression. The non-invasive technology, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), is administered once-daily over a brief treatment course. It has demonstrated effectiveness with patients and in clinical research conducted on the Butler campus to provide relief from previously persistent depressive symptoms.
